How It Works
Betaine Hydrochloride
Betaine hydrochloride (or simply betaine) helps create an acidic environment to facilitate the activity of pepsin. When ingested, betaine hydrochloride is broken down in the stomach, releasing hydrochloric acid and increasing stomach acidity. Betaine hydrochloride is traditionally used to help with poor digestion due to low stomach acid. Increasing stomach acidity may also help improve the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals that require an acidic environment for proper breakdown and utilization in the body, including vitamin B12, folate, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. Other traditional uses of betaine include arterial support, tired blood, low potassium levels, yeast imbalance, liver support, and more.
Pepsin
Pepsin is an enzyme that is produced naturally in the body to aid in the digestion of dietary proteins. Pepsin helps pre-digest proteins in the stomach. By aiding in the breakdown of proteins, pepsin can help relieve symptoms of stomach upset, bloating and gas. Although pepsin is a powerful enzyme, it only breaks down proteins in the presence of hydrochloric acid. Pepsin also helps to detoxify the bowel by promoting better digestion, which leads to improved intestinal transit time and better elimination of metabolic waste.
