Mullein helps the body to expel excess mucus by making coughs more productive, to bring up mucus that may be settling in the chest or in the throat. Mullein’s high mucilage content and mild saponins work to calm irritation in the internal parts of the nose, mouth or throat. Mucilage forms a slippery and soothing gel-like substance when combined with water, which may explain mullein's beneficial effects for soothing irritated tissues. Plus, it's an effective astringent, which makes yarrow helpful for firming and tightening tissues. Yarrow has been used traditionally for colds, coughs and other respiratory disorders, digestive problems, and injuries. Native Americans embraced yarrow for a variety of applications, including minor discomfort and digestive support.
Yerba Santa
Yerba santa has long been known to have medicinal properties. Yerba santa was revered by Native American tribes for its respiratory support. It was traditionally brewed into a tea, eaten or used as a poultice. Historically, it was used for a variety of complaints, including respiratory problems, fever, head discomfort, bruises, immune challenges, and muscle spasms. Yerba santa contains substances that help loosen up mucus in the chest, which helps explain its use for coughs, colds, difficulty breathing, and other respiratory complaints. First listed in the Eclectic Medical Journal in 1875, Yerba santa was added to the Pharmacopoeia of the United States in 1894. And in 1902, a treatise on plants used by native people in Mendocino County, California was published declaring that “No plant is more highly valued as a medicine by all the tribes of Mendocino County.”
Goldenseal
Often called ‘the King of mucous membranes’ goldenseal is traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to reduce excess mucus and relive mild upper respiratory tract congestion. Goldenseal’s immune-supporting properties are largely due to its hydrastine, berberine and canadine alkaloids. These active ingredients support the mucous membranes that line the respiratory and digestive tracts, helping the body maintain strong immunity and providing respiratory system support.
Peppermint
Peppermint is an aromatic herb used as a traditional remedy and as a culinary herb. Peppermint supports immune system activity and provides natural relief for respiratory congestion. Peppermint contains the active ingredient menthol, which can help thin and loosen mucus, reducing congestion and coughs. Peppermint is well recognized for its traditional use for symptoms of colds and other respiratory illnesses, and for soothing oral mucosa and throat soreness.
Sage
Sage has been revered as an effective herb for assisting with everything from bleeding and ulcers to sore throats and coughs. The ancient Greek physician Dioscorides used it to clean sores, dress bleeding wounds, and alleviate symptoms of respiratory distress. Later, inhaling steam infused with sage was found to help asthma sufferers at the onset of an attack.
Astragalus
Astragalus is a powerful adaptogenic herb that builds the immune system and may help activate T-cells, a type of white blood cell that plays an important role in human immune defenses. Active compounds known as astragalisodes boost immune function by enhancing the production of immunoglobulin and stimulating the activity of immune cells known as macrophages. Astragalus also provides antioxidant activity to minimize free radical damage to the cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory systems, and it appears to favorably modulate the gut microbiota.
Slippery Elm
Slippery elm is a species of elm native to eastern North America. When mixed with water, the soft, inner bark of the slippery elm tree becomes gel-like and soothing. In traditional herbal medicine, capsicum has been used throughout the ages for a variety of health concerns, including cough, throat soreness, poor appetite, and sluggish digestion, to name a few.
